Reviews
Perry,
This may be a book that does not translate well to the audio format, mainly because of Janetti’s voice。 He evened out as the book went along, but the start was rough。 He seemed to go into monotone at the end of sentences。 Once I got past his voice, I found the tone more bitchy than funny。
Joe Kemper,
Laughed out loud numerous times。 Enjoyable, quick, fun read。 It loses a star for how many times (at least once a chapter) Gary waxes poetic about how attractive he was/is。
Louise,
Parts of this book were funny but overall not so。 I expected more。
Becca,
That Oscar speech truly made me laugh。
Morgan Jackson,
I could watch Gary & Brad’s Instagram stories as a TV show so expected this to be an amazing, quick, funny listen。 Unfortunately I just couldn’t get into it, the second half was better than the first and Gary’s voice makes it so much better!!
Mary,
I get it。 The author is gay。 But my gosh, we hammered that point in every paragraph or every sentence。 It became tiresome。 The timeline moved back and forth。 Seems like it could have been better with more aggressive editing and less whining。
Erica,
It was funny in some places but i feel like he was all over the place with the life story。
Angela,
Laugh out loud 。。。 while crying - very fun。
P。J。 Tiberio,
It was a fun and easy read。 I found myself nodding along, giggling and crying throughout。 I hope he continues to write about his life as this book focused mostly on his childhood, teens and early adulthood。 The way he portrays his experience with the AIDS pandemic at the end of the book took me by surprise in the best possible way。
Yvonne Stoikos,
Cute quirky funny likeable easy read
Heather,
This essay collection was really entertaining。 It is funny, dripping with sarcasm and snark。 But he twists us every now and then, offering quiet, poignant moments of self reflection and gratitude。 I listened to the book, which I highly recommend。 His audio is fantastic。 AND every time he mentions something only Hofstra people would really know - the Unispan, the Axinn library movies, Tower B, Hofstra USA - well, I delighted in feeling like an insider for once。 Class of ‘96 - Go Dutch。 💙💛
marta ✨,
DNF!
Rachel,
I really wanted to like this book but I honestly just didn’t。 Felt discombobulated and didn’t flow for me。 Quick read though。
Shelby,
This cracked me up at times and was pretty entertaining, especially the chapters where he reflects on working as a server at Bennigan’s and being in retail。 It brought me back to the painful months at Pappasito’s。 The most character building for sure!🤣I don’t really know why the book is titled the way it is? Excited to read his new book coming out though, and definitely have followed him on Instagram and am loving everything he puts out。
Elysa,
The content wasn't particularly unique, and many creative professionals have similar stories。 However, Janetti's writing makes this book unique, funny, and entertaining。 His tone and turns of phrase cracked me up。 The content wasn't particularly unique, and many creative professionals have similar stories。 However, Janetti's writing makes this book unique, funny, and entertaining。 His tone and turns of phrase cracked me up。 。。。more
Nick,
Like an autobiography by Buddy Cole。 Caused my cold blackened heart to laugh out loud
Rick Westerkamp,
I laughed。 I cried。 It was better than CATS (actually, no, because I will always love CATS)。 I really enjoyed Janetti’s wit and ability to recall painful experiences through a comedic lens, a quality I possess at times and envy in others always。 Each essay is authentic and vulnerable and has at least one zinger that made me laugh out loud。 Really fun。 Really gay。 Totally my brand。
Roland Curit,
This is a composition of short stories from the author's younger years。 Gary is gay and apparently is/was self-absorbed。 He goes on and on about his fabulous looks and physique。 He worked out constantly, wore the latest 80s fashions, watched a ton of soap operas, all while dreaming of being an actor or an author。 Well, he eventually does become an author, but not during this time frame。None of the chapters relate to each other and they are not chronological。 It reads more like stand-up comedy th This is a composition of short stories from the author's younger years。 Gary is gay and apparently is/was self-absorbed。 He goes on and on about his fabulous looks and physique。 He worked out constantly, wore the latest 80s fashions, watched a ton of soap operas, all while dreaming of being an actor or an author。 Well, he eventually does become an author, but not during this time frame。None of the chapters relate to each other and they are not chronological。 It reads more like stand-up comedy than engaging prose。 I'm not sure if there was a point to the book other than to make a few people laugh (not me) and to make a few bucks publishing (he got my money)。 He reminds me of the flamboyant gay who is loud at parties, and while the act may be entertaining, the stories themselves are nothing special。 Not bad enough for 3 stars。 Not entertaining enough for 4。 I'll give it a weak 4。 。。。more

A light, funny, quick, enjoyable read! Opens a windows into the adolescence and young adulthood of a gay Gary, realizing, shying away from and eventually coming out of the closet。 Set in NYC in the 80s, with wild tales of the daily shenanigans that people got away with then。

Akilah J。,
It's like a brain dump of the most random things Gary remembers about his life, and it was a strangely delightful listen。 I laughed a lot, and saw a lot of myself in him。 It's like a brain dump of the most random things Gary remembers about his life, and it was a strangely delightful listen。 I laughed a lot, and saw a lot of myself in him。 。。。more
Laura Luther,
Thank you, Gary, for sharing your stories。 What a fun book to read。
Lindsay Nixon,
😂 gotta love those gays! 🌈 this memoir manages to be light, funny, introspective, historical & a fabulous trip down memory lane (80-90s culture)。 🦩 3。75 stars!
Hannah Stovall,
Good, funny storytelling—but I don’t think I’d recommend it a ton。 2。5 stars, really
Amy Drelick,
I really wanted to like this more。 The audio book was better, it gave some much needed color to the stories by hearing it in Gary’s voice。 The stories themselves were a real mix bag, a few hilarious, most had funny moments。 If I wasn’t from Long Island and throughly enjoyed every joke made at its expense, this might have only been a 2 for me。
Raegan,
I give this book 2。5 stars because I knew what the author was trying to do, and how he was trying to sound, but I felt like it lost my attention more than it held it。
catie,
Only made it to 30% and then had to stop as we just weren’t vibing enough。
Umi Arenas,
I’m a BIG fan of Gary’s work (and his Instagram) and while I enjoyed getting to know more about his early life (would’ve loved more about his early writing career) and his passion for One Life to Live (I did watch “Karen Wolek on the stand” on YouTube and it did make it better), I missed the comedy the most。 I was expecting to laugh out loud like I do with his Instagram or while watching The Prince, but it just wasn’t there for me… something felt off。
Colleen Marie,
Listened to the audiobook version on a long drive and while I was entertained enough, the different chapters felt a bit out of order and they didn’t really flow。 I laughed at a few points, but overall it was just ok。
Alistair,
A series of vignettes from the author’s early life, that is ‘til he hits maturity, which in Janetti’s case is after 30 when his looks start to diminish。 They are often very funny and sometimes poignant。*He’s challenged in his youth and early adulthood by his extreme attractiveness (something the author never lets The Reader forget)。 And do we not all wish to be so challenged? But let’s not be coy nor bitter: if you’ve got the looks let the games begin。*Language alert: I couldn’t give this to my A series of vignettes from the author’s early life, that is ‘til he hits maturity, which in Janetti’s case is after 30 when his looks start to diminish。 They are often very funny and sometimes poignant。*He’s challenged in his youth and early adulthood by his extreme attractiveness (something the author never lets The Reader forget)。 And do we not all wish to be so challenged?
